Perilipin proteins regulate muscle lipid metabolism and glucose homeostasis

The close association between the growing epidemics of obesity and type 2 diabetes continues to fuel interest in understanding how alterations in lipid metabolism contribute to the development of insulin resistance. This presentation will outline our recent endeavours aimed at understanding how the protein perilipin (PLIN) 5 regulates lipid metabolism and insulin action. Data will be presented from studies conducted in cultured cells and mice with whole-body and tissue-specific ablation of PLIN5. These studies reveal unique PLIN5-mediated remodelling of lipid metabolism in skeletal muscle and altered cellular stress signalling that impacts on systemic glucose metabolism.
